This school year will mark my 31st year teaching at St. Matthew’s School. I started my teaching career at All Saints’ Episcopal School in Ft. Worth while still a student at Texas Christian University. When we came to Austin, St. Matthew’s Church had just moved to this campus. Being lifelong Episcopalians, we joined St. Matthew’s Church. A little school of two classes was opening at the new church facilities. It wasn’t long before I found myself in a classroom in that new little school. The rest is history! Just look at us now!
A little family background: My husband, Larry, is retired after many years in the TV broadcasting business. We have two daughters, Ellen Cole, a microbiologist at Hermann Hospital in Houston, and Elizabeth (Buffy) Currens, a piano teacher, judge and accompanist in Austin. Our son-in-law, Chris Currens, is Director of Special Projects with the Texas State Preservation Board. Our wonderful grandson, Christopher Currens, St. Matthew’s alum, is now a sophomore at Anderson High School after attending Trinity Episcopal School. One of my greatest joys is listening to Christopher play the piano—and the violin, the guitar and the drum in the Trojan Band.
Speaking of Joys, teaching these precious children at St. Matthew’s School is right there at the top of the list!
